First Moments

new babe
on legs none too sturdy
still blinking away
memories of birth, seemingly early

Majestic

stunned in moments
too fresh to comprehend
with a walk round the hay patch
and audience's eyes to lend

Miraculous

Ah, Mama stands close
spent, yet dutifully present
ready to give life eternal
to child's needs in this moment

Your privacy
lost in ticket sales
by unscrupulous flashes
of visitors over the rails

Anon,
Whilst camera's eye
does pry
can we deny
the eyes of the young
with purity of soul
dipped in a white halo
with vision?

This wobbly newborn drew me in with awe at new life, juxtaposed against the spinning madness of a local fair. I was smitten.

Tomorrow's poetry fare over at OneShot is already up and running, so head on over and take a peek at the offerings this week.

  1. You captured the feeling of wonder and amazement while surrounded by the chaos so well. Totally adorable and i love the "white halo." Thanks for sharing the pics and your words!

  2. Well done! I remember years ago writing a poem about a newborn foal... that was when I still had horses, and long before I thought I might be able to write poetry :) - but these moments grab, as you say. I read somewhere today a line of Robert Frost's, that "a poem begins with a lump in the throat"...

  7. I have a lot of friends who raise farm animals mostly alpaca's some too have goats and chickens a few sheep, -- On several occasions when I happen to be visiting _ I wound up helping the momma with the birthing, for they were in trouble, it turned our fine, but the one time the goat was tiring hard, and we helped pull them out but we had to bury them, it broke my heart, and the owner said to me, "it is life joanny on the farm."

Your poem is lovely and so are the pic's and the new born yes with its innocence.

    Cheers,
    Joanny

  12. you capture that awe of new life so beautifully!
my uncle used to have cows - and when we spent our summer holidays there and a calf was born, i was the happiest child on earth - and cared well for the newborn...

  15. Around age 12-14 my sister and I raised Hereford steers, showed them, auctioned them at the county fair. One of the happiest memories of my youth.

I had pleasure of 'living' in the barn for four days and nights. Witnessed several beautiful 'animal happenings' as you so good describe.

Thank you for your linking to One-Shot, and letting me share a memory.

  24. I think a worthwhile thing to show the kids, but really a mixed thing. I do love fall fairs though. We will just have to meet a few more farmers so that the kids can see real animals.
